Why Certain Diamond Cuts are More Expensive

The most expensive cut of diamond is the round brilliant. Gemologists estimate that a round cut diamond may cost as much as 30% more than a similar fancy shaped diamond for several reasons.  For one thing, it takes much more raw material to cut round brilliant diamonds and to ensure the demanding proportions that maximize the potential brightness of the stone are met.  It is also due to the much larger demand for round cut diamonds.

It is a common misconception that a diamond’s cut is the shape of the stone such as round or oval.  Rather the cut of the diamond describes how well the stone’s facets interact with the light.  The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) says the proportions of a precision-cut standard round brilliant diamond affect the brightness of the diamond (the amount of internal and external white light reflected).  It also affects the fire, which is the scattering of the white light into all the colors of the rainbow, and finally the scintillation or the amount of sparkle the diamond produces.

They add that, “precise artistry and workmanship are required to fashion a stone so its proportions, symmetry and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond.”  The “ideal cut” allows the maximum amount of light to return through the top of the diamond and takes into account the depth, table size, crown height and angle, girdle thickness and more.  Gemologists carefully evaluate a rough stone to determine the best cut that will offer the maximum clarity, color and carat weight.

While all of this may sound complicated, it does help to have a rudimentary understanding of how the cut affects the stone’s sparkle and brilliance as well as to only shop with a highly-respected jeweler.  Diamonds are an investment and it pays to make an educated decision.  Please visit Padis Jewelry for more information on diamond buying and to set up an appointment with one of our knowledgeable jewelry consultants.

Engagement Ring Trends for 2018

If you plan to shop for an engagement ring sometime this year, you will want to know the latest trends for 2018.   According to WeddingWire, an online marketplace for vendors and engaged couples, the number one trend this year will be a center stone in the shape of an oval.  The oval has been steadily gaining popularity due to a unique and clean look that adds a vintage feel to any setting.

Exuding femininity, rose gold is also still a strong trend for the upcoming year.  If you love the look, you will be pleased to find more and more jewelers are offering engagement and wedding rings in a rose gold option.  A recent Bride Magazine articles quotes jeweler Selin Kent as saying the rose gold trend is here to stay, but adds that she recommends a slightly different take.  She explains a fresh, new look is to have the center stone in platinum or white gold, and the rest of the ring in a colored metal. Selin says, “Diamonds can take on the color of the metal they’re set in, so mixing metals within the ring will show a diamond in its best light.”

Additionally Bride Magazine notes that Jenny Klatt of Jemma Wynne suggests open ring styles are likely to be popular this coming engagement season.  Her Jemma Wynne partner, Stephanie Wynne Lalin, says, “It’s an alternative, but still feels timeless. It gives brides a real opportunity for personalization and—bonus!!—she can have two stones.”   Furthermore, the two stones provide the option of choosing two diamonds, a diamond and colored gemstone or other possibilities.

We invite you to look at the gorgeous collection of engagement rings from Padis Jewelry.  We proudly offer a broad range of luxury brand designers and have one of the best collections of loose diamonds in California.  Please see our website to learn more.
