The Evolution of Engagement Rings through the Decades

Just as fashion changes from decade to decade so have fashion trends in significant jewelry such as engagement rings.  While some styles have proved timeless, a look back at the last 100 years shows certain designs going in and out of fashion.

Starting with the 1920’s, halo engagement rings (setting with a center gemstone in a collection of round pavé or micro-pavé diamonds or colored gemstones) were very popular as were Asscher and emerald-cut diamonds.  As the Insider website explains, “engagement rings with geometric shapes and sharp lines were popular in the 1920s, coinciding with the height of the Art Deco period.”

During the 30’s, styles were often a single diamond set on a band in the shape of a ribbon or a bow.  In the 40’s, the DeBeers’ launched their successful ad campaign, “Diamonds are Forever!” which greatly increased the popularity of round diamond solitaire engagement rings.  The lack of platinum due to WWII meant most rings were set in yellow or rose gold.

The middle of the last century saw a trend in stacked rings that was attributed to an engagement ring of Audrey Hepburn’s as well as pear-shaped rings.  Jackie Kennedy’s engagement ring featuring emeralds and diamonds helped to make colored gemstone rings fashionable in the 60s.  Emerald-cut diamonds continued to be popular in the 1970’s.

No doubt influenced by Princess Diana’s engagement ring, which had a sapphire gemstone surrounded by diamonds, colored gemstone engagement rings were on trend in the 80’s.  Round solitaire rings were also a classic choice.  The 90’s were the decade that saw a rise in white gold or platinum settings and marquise-cut diamonds.  By 2000, princess-cut rings were back in fashion, and sales of cushion-cut diamond engagement rings were a strong choice in 2010.

At Padis Jewelry our extensive collection of loose diamonds and gemstones, engagement rings, and wedding rings means our customers can find the “perfect ring.”  Furthermore we carry all of the top luxury brand names at very competitive prices.

Keep Your Diamonds & Gemstones Looking Like New

Diamond and gemstone jewelry is an investment, which is why you want your jewelry to look beautiful for years to come.  As diamond and gemstone experts, Padis Jewelry offers some easy do’s and don’ts that will keep it looking its best.

We know especially bridal jewelry is bought with the intention to wear every day, and that people want their diamond rings to sparkle like the day they bought them for decades.  This is why Padis’ diamond consultants tell customers that, “diamonds are forever as long as you take good care of them!”

To keep your diamonds sparkling, we recommend removing your rings when doing rough work or before going into a chlorinated pool or hot tub.  Also avoid touching diamonds with your fingers as they can transfer oils that make it easier for dirt particles to stick to the stones.  Another tip is to remember to take off your ring every time you apply hand creams and lotions.

There are a few tips to help gemstone jewelry maintain its brilliance.  Since gemstones are less hard than diamonds (some are very brittle), we recommend avoiding any sudden temperature change.  We advise customers who intend to wear a gemstone ring every day to choose rubies and/or sapphires as they are almost as hard as diamonds on the Mohs scale.  Rubies’ hardness is second to that of a diamond (which is 4-5 times harder).   Furthermore if you lead an active lifestyle, we recommend you do not wear your gemstone rings and bracelets throughout the day as they are susceptible to damage.

At Padis Jewelry, we not only sell loose diamonds, engagement rings and fine jewelry but offer professional cleaning services that include inspecting the integrity of your ring’s setting to avoid losing a stone.  We also offer ring sizing, stone tightening, prong retipping or replacement, polishing and more as well as answer any questions regarding the care of your diamond and gemstone jewelry.  Please visit our visit our website for contact information and to set up an appointment to one of our San Francisco’s showrooms.

Since 1974, Padis Jewelry has been a trusted source for buying exquisite certified loose diamonds, engagement rings and fine jewelry.  We are one of the only jewelers in the area that offers such an exclusive selection of top names in the industry as well as such a large inventory.  If you are a lover of beautiful jewels, please schedule at visit to San Francisco’s finest jewelry showrooms.

Daily Diamonds from Padis Jewelry

Beyond romantic symbolism, there is a reason most women wear jewelry aside from their diamond engagement rings every day: diamonds are beautiful! They symbolize natural beauty, value, and significance, and despite some outdated opinions on etiquette, they can be worn every day.

Diamonds are certainly durable enough to be worn daily. Diamond is the hardest gemstone on earth. It rates 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, which means it is much harder than any other gem. The idea of wearing diamonds every day has evolved alongside the trend toward affordable fashions that are inspired by couture designs. It has cued jewelry designers to follow suit by creating more casual diamond looks.

One of the few neutral gems, the colorless diamond has earned the status as the go-to, go-with anything accessory. Casual luxury is the new norm in fashion, and diamonds are an easy choice to add a bit of sparkle to our daily lives. Young, inventive designers such as Tacori and Simon G have largely spearheaded the fashion-forward diamond jewelry category. The looks are often made with smaller stones that cost less and are sometimes set into silver or 14k gold, making the styles inherently more casual, affordable, and ideal for gifting.

Diamonds also effortlessly punch up outfits, and diamond earrings draw the eye to the face where you want the eyes to fall. Diamonds have the versatility to accessorize anything from T-shirts to cocktail dresses, business suits to bikinis.

Although they are hard, diamonds can chip, break, or fall out of mountings if jewelry prongs become loose. Remove diamond jewelry when performing manual labor or participating in sports, and don’t subject jewelry to cleaning solutions or chlorinated water. For everyday jewelry, you might consider pieces with diamonds set in bezel or channel settings that offer protection by way of metal sides and low-profile settings. The positioning of earrings and necklaces — away from potential contact — automatically means that those diamond pieces are out of harm’s way. Also consider platinum settings, which offer the most security because platinum is such a durable metal.

Among the leading jewelry must-haves: diamond stud and hoop earrings; diamond solitaire and pendant necklaces; and diamond bangle bracelets and stackable bands.

As we begin the New Year, we want you, our customers, to know how much we appreciate you.  In our 40 year history, we’ve always stayed true to our high quality standards and the overall mission for our business: to create the most positive and memorable customer experience; to provide personable guidance in a pleasant atmosphere; and, finally, to offer exceptional value and unsurpassed craftsmanship with each and every purchase. Jewelry Appraisals and Other Services at Padis

Along with selling some of the Bay Area’s finest jewelry, Padis Jewelry offers an array of services including professional jewelry appraisals, jewelry repairs, and custom designs.  There are several reasons to get a professional jewelry appraisal. Whether you are trying to get insurance coverage for your treasured pieces, or to determine the value of family heirlooms, or to guide the fair distribution of jewelry assets, appraisals are an important asset.  Even if you had a piece of jewelry appraised years ago, the value most likely has changed over the years and the item should be reappraised.  To ensure you get a fair and accurate appraisal, experts recommend you use an American Gem Society (AGS) certified gemologist appraiser (CGA) such as we have as part of our Padis staff.

In addition, Padis’ in-house bench jewelers allow us to offer many convenient same-day services such as jewelry repairs or cleaning and maintenance.  We also do watch repairs as well as routine battery and band replacements.  Our highly trained specialists have the expertise to restore and repair almost any piece of jewelry including a family heirloom and can make it look almost as good as new.  Padis’ jewelry services also include prong tipping or replacement, ring sizing, mounting/remounting and much more.

Another valuable service we offer is redesigning or repurposing a piece of jewelry, such as an engagement ring from an earlier marriage, or a family heirloom that is sentimental but not exactly your style.  Our experts can help you turn an unworn piece of jewelry into something that reflects your unique taste by repurposing the diamonds or gemstones and placing them in a new setting.

Please visit the Padis Jewelry website for more information regarding our extensive jewelry collection as well as our many services.  For friendly service and great prices, shop with confidence at one of the top jewelers in the San Francisco area!

Buying jewelry such as an engagement ring is a significant purchase, which is why you want to shop with a reputable jeweler you can trust and one that is likely to be around in the years to come.  Padis Jewelry is just such a business and has been family-owned since the inception of the Steve Padis Jewelry brand in 1974.  Now more than 40 years later, Padis is still a family affair and is owned and operated by Steve, his wife, Judy, and daughter, Alexis.

Steve’s journey as a jeweler began with selling beads he had strung on the streets of Berkeley, CA while a student at the University of California, Berkeley.  Once he graduated, he starting creating sterling silver, turquoise and gold chain jewelry.  Judy and Steve met during this time through mutual contacts in the industry.  The Steve Padis Jewelry brand was the formal beginning of the family’s decades-long passion for precious metals and diamonds, and was the start of establishing Padis Jewelry as one of the finest jewelers in San Francisco.

We now have three large showrooms in the heart of the city’s jewelry district including at The Gift Center and The Jewelry Center.  We also own and operate the Padis Jewelry and Padis Romance store in St. Helena, which is set in California's beautiful wine country.

Exquisite Right Hand Rings

On trend and more popular than ever, a right hand ring may be purchased to mark an important milestone or event, or just because the person fell in love with a design.  Also, more and more women are spending their own hard-earned money to make significant jewelry purchases that include statement diamond or gemstone rings to wear on their right hand.   In the US, as well as other countries, the left ring finger is generally reserved for a ring that signifies love and commitment, while wearing a diamond ring on the right hand makes it clear that it is not an engagement ring

In the past, such rings were often referred to as “cocktail rings.”  The Jewelry Editor explains, “While the term ‘right hand ring’ is a relatively new one, the idea of wearing a ring on the right hand to signify a woman’s economic independence has its roots in the original cocktail rings of the 1920s.”  We typically think of right-hand rings as being more flamboyant and are often worn on a woman’s right ring finger or index finger.  Other style trends include stacking several small rings on one finger or wearing one on each finger.  Some women also wear anniversary “eternity bands” on their right ring finger.

In 2003, a ‘Raise your Right Hand’ campaign was introduced by DeBeers that targeted women with enough money to buy a diamond ring for themselves.  The campaign used the catchy line of “Your left hand rocks the cradle. Your right hand rules the world.”  The campaign was an overwhelming success as it increased sales of non-bridal diamond rings by 15 percent.

If you are interested in an exquisite right hand ring, we invite you to visit the Padis Jewelry website to learn more about our San Francisco showrooms.  We carry the largest collection of loose diamonds and gemstones in Northern California along with a wide selection of the most luxurious brand names in the industry.

Customer Satisfaction is Always Our Goal!

At Padis Jewelry, we don’t just sell jewelry, but rather strive to provide customers with an all-around enjoyable shopping experience.  We want you to feel that you can trust our jewelry consultants to help you select jewelry pieces you will treasure.  This is why we are so gratified to receive plenty of positive reviews from actual Padis Jewelry clients.

As one customer wrote, “We knew we wanted to get married and thought it would be fun to pick out the engagement ring together. We needed to find a place that could guarantee the ring we were getting was conflict-free, which meant a lot to us.”  She describes how accommodating their jewelry consultant was and how he took the time to listen to their needs and answer all of their questions.   “He was so patient, easy going, knowledgeable and really worked with us and our budget. He not only made sure we got the best quality diamond for our price range, but he also made sure the mood was celebratory as well.”

Another happy customer took the time to gush about her and her husband’s shopping experience with us.  Wanting a Verragio ring design, they discovered that Padis Jewelry was the only well-reviewed store in Northern California that carried Verragio rings.  Her husband drove three hours from Tahoe to San Francisco where he worked with jewelry consultants who helped him to get the ring sized and a diamond set within a very tight deadline.  His wife says he came back home “so knowledgeable about diamonds and kept telling me about the 4 C's."   The couple was so pleased with the experience they came back and got their wedding rings from the same consultant.

We invite you to come and visit one of Padis Jewelry showrooms for a stress-free, enjoyable shopping experience.  Our friendly and knowledgeable jewelry consultants will work within your budget and style preferences to help you find the perfect piece of jewelry.  Please visit our website to set up an appointment.

7 Ways to Upgrade Your Engagement Ring

There are many brides who, after rediscovering their diamond engagement ring from their jewelry box years later, feel the same wonder, excitement and love as they did when they first set their eyes on it.  And then there are brides who don’t.

Whether your taste or your situation that has changed over the years, if you are looking for means to upgrade your engagement ring, you’ve come to the right place at Padis Jewelry.

You may have fallen head over heels in love the moment you first saw your engagement ring, but if you’ve had a change of heart, you don’t need to feel ashamed or uneasy. Our preferences change all the time. With so many new trends and intricate designs for engagement rings today, you may feel the urge to change it up a bit.

This is a ring you are wearing everyday as a symbol of love and devotion to your partner, you should love it! Here are some ways to bring the spark back.

Go For A Bigger Stone:

With a few little adjustments, setting a new bigger diamond is one of the easiest ways to make your diamond engagement ring more noticeable and attention-grabbing. If your setting allows for it, our jeweler can simply set a bigger diamond on the band, making it sparkle even more than before.

Add A Set Of Complimentary Diamonds On The Shoulder:

If the main stone isn’t the issue and the bland broad shoulder is just not appealing enough, just add a band of smaller cut diamonds to get that heavier looking feeling off the ring. The detailed new band will make any plain-looking diamond engagement ring more intricate and exquisite.

A Single or Double Halo Will Do the Trick:

If a big-sized center stone is out of your budget, you can simply make it appear bigger by adding a halo of small cut diamonds to encapsulate the center diamond. It can make the stone look upwards of 20% larger and also serves as a natural “bumper” to protect your center diamond from damage.

Change the band:

You can always opt for a band change by either eliminating or adding more twists to your plain looking diamond engagement ring. Not only will it give the center stone more definition, it will also give the ring a whole new look.

Change the Ring’s Setting:

Many a times, the setting on the ring is too impractical. The end result is that it sits in a cushioned box on your dressing table. If ring sits up too high, it gets tangled in your hair and snagged on those clothes; too low and it shadows the intricacy of the ring. Get it fixed with just a few adjustments that we will be happy to make.

Change The Shape Of The Stone:

Not a big fan the shape of your center stone? Feel like everyone around you has the same cut? Perhaps consider a new shape!  A different shape will change the overall look of the ring and certain stone shapes compliment your fingers and hands well.

Set Side Stones:

If a little enhancement or bling is all that you need, opting for smaller side stones is the perfect way to do that. When opting for side stones, you can either go with trillions, princess cuts, round stones, tapered baguettes etc. Traditionally, the three stones in an engagement ring represent “Past, Present, and Future,” a nice way to tie in the sentiment and span of your relationship.

So whether you’re upgrading your own ring or even updating grandma’s ring, consider these options and you’ll surely be happy with the outcome! It can be difficult to let go of something with so much personal value attached to it, but Padis Jewelry can help guide you toward the best option for what to do with your piece, and make sure you are well educated in all the different options.  Don’t hesitate to visit us at the store, give us a call, or shoot us an email with questions.

Is Your Style Classic, Modern or Uniquely Your Own?

The shape of an engagement ring is sure to say something about the woman wearing it.  One of the most iconic and timeless choices as well as the most popular is the round solitaire, which looks as stunning today as it did on your grandmother’s hand fifty years ago.  While a round solitaire can be subtle and understated, it is unlikely to ever go out of style.

This classic diamond engagement ring was first introduced in 1886 by Charles Tiffany.  The setting was designed to elevate and showcase a round diamond above the band of the ring, and was held in place with six evenly spaced claw-shaped prongs.  Prior to this time, most rings were extremely intricate and had very detailed designs so a simple, precious metal band that allowed a diamond to sparkle to its fullest potential was considered revolutionary.

As the stone is the focal point in a solitaire, it is important to buy the highest grade round brilliant cut stone you can afford to ensure your ring has the maximum sparkle.  Padis Jewelry’s consultants remind customers that the larger the diamond is, most likely it has more inclusions.  Also as it is larger, the inclusions are typically more visible than on a smaller diamond so it is better to go with a smaller but better grade stone.

A close second in popularity to the round brilliant cut is a princess shaped diamond.  Almost matching the fire and brilliance, the princess cut was created in 1980 and is the most common fancy cut diamond.  The square or rectangular shaped stone is a mix of diamond cuts and has a profile of an inverted pyramid with four beveled sides.  It can have anywhere from 53 to 144 facets.  Emerald and Asscher shaped diamonds are step cuts consisting of rectilinear facets arranged parallel to the girdle.  This produces a mirror effect that plays with the light and dark planes of the cut.

Please schedule a visit to one of Padis Jewelry’s beautiful showrooms to see our diamond collection up close and in person to really appreciate the different stones.  Also remember if you are traveling this summer to Napa Valley, visit Padis Romance in St. Helena, CA.

Diamond and Gemstone Engagement Rings

At Padis Jewelry, we have one of the largest selections of engagement rings in Northern California and more than 10,000 diamonds to ensure customers find the perfect ring.  Among our extensive collection, we have the most sought-after luxury name brands that include classic and modern designs as well as the latest trends.

Shopping for an engagement ring you will both love forever can be a tough decision for many couples, and it isn’t any easier with the amount of choices available in not only diamond rings, but beautiful gemstone choices.  If you want to choose classic styling, diamonds are a timeless way to go, but even here you have a wide range of choices.  For example, you can choose a diamond as a center stone and go with complementary diamonds or colored gemstones around the setting and band.

While diamonds may be the most expensive gemstone, they symbolize eternal love and strength, and are also the most popular choice for an engagement ring.  If you do go with a diamond, you will still have plenty of options to choose from in terms of cuts and settings.

Another popular choice for engagement rings is sapphires, which are believed to symbolize fidelity.  Sapphire engagement rings became more popular after Kate Middleton received her 18-carat royal blue sapphire ring, which had previously belonged to Princess Diana.  Sapphires are a good choice for everyday wear as they are just behind diamonds in hardness (9 on the Mohs scale with diamonds at 10).  The deep blue gemstone’s quality is judged on the color.

Rubies also make excellent engagement rings as they too are a 9 on the Mohs scale and will look as beautiful as the day you bought it for years to come.  More affordable than diamonds and symbolizing purity and innocence, pearls are a nostalgic and feminine choice.  Please visit Padis Jewelry’s website to see our large collection of loose diamonds and gemstones along with stunning engagement and wedding rings.

The Furrer Jacot collection includes Swiss-made diamond rings, carbon fiber rings, wedding bands and engagement rings that are designed to last a lifetime and offer individuality, authenticity, creativity and exclusivity.  The company’s roots began over 150 years ago, and continued with the partnering of Fritz Furrer and Lucienne Jacot in the mid-20th century.  The House of Furrer Jacot has continued to perpetuate its founders' vision: “creating rare jewels that symbolize a vow, a shared hope, and happiness itself.”

As a circle symbolizes the eternal bond of love, Furrer Jacot rings are designed to express a promise of eternity with exceptional rings crafted from the most precious alloys.  Each piece is created using the highest standards of craftsmanship and distinctive production methods.

On Padis Jewelry’s website and in our showrooms, we offer an exquisite collection of Furrer Jacot wedding bands and engagement rings.  For example, we have a matte Furrer Jacot men's wedding ring with beautifully polished ridge center detail in Palladium 950 and Carbon Fiber.  Another gorgeous piece from the collection is an 18K White Gold 1.82 Cttw. diamond engagement ring.
