The Precious Metals Used in Jewelry Settings

Padis Jewelry offers a stunning collection of jewelry designs from the top names in the industry.  As such when you shop with us for your wedding rings or other fine jewelry you will find it set in several precious metals including gold, platinum and sterling silver.

In gold, the term karat is used to measure the gold content or purity of the gold and the most expensive is 24 karat, which is 100% pure.  Since it is less dense than lower karats of gold, it is soft and pliable making it unsuitable for most jewelry.

Many luxury designs are set in beautiful 18 karat gold, which contains .750 gold content (18/24) and 25% of other metals such as copper, nickel, zinc and others.  Less expensive but also commonly used in fine jewelry is 14 k gold consisting of .585 gold (14/24).  The other ten parts are typically five parts copper and five parts silver.  White gold contains at least one white metal such as zinc, manganese or palladium.  It is also treated with rhodium to give it luster and its white look.  Typically 4% silver and 21% copper is added to 18 k rose gold to give it a rose color.

The rarest (30 times rarer than gold) and most expensive precious metal used in jewelry settings is platinum.  The metal is 95% pure and will not tarnish or fade and also provides a brilliant silvery-white luster to beautifully reflect the radiance of diamonds.  Jewelry made of platinum is stamped PT or plat in the United States.

Silver is the most inexpensive of the precious metals commonly used in jewelry and is estimated to be approximately 1/50 the price of gold.  As pure silver is very soft, most silver jewelry is alloyed with copper and must contain a minimum of 925 parts silver for every 1000 parts of material and is marked 925 or sterling 925.  Visit the Padis Jewelry website to browse our gorgeous collection of jewelry or to get contact information to set up an appointment to visit one of our showrooms.

Halo Engagement Rings Offer a Variety of Options

For the last several years, halo engagement rings have been very popular and are just behind the most popular choice of a solitaire.  This may be due in part to the renewed interest in vintage and antique designs.  Halo engagement rings first became popular during the Victorian era and then again in the Art Deco period of the 1920s.

It case you do not know, a halo ring has a center stone that is encircled by a collection of round pavé or micro-pavé diamonds or in some case colored gemstones.   All of these small stones increase the sparkle and help to draw attention to the center stone and make it look like it is a much bigger carat size.  For someone who wants a unique look, the Halo ring offers many different styles and finish options.  You ring can be a classic circle of stones on a plain band or elaborately decorated with stones or filigree along the shank of the ring.

Another advantage to a halo design is that the cost of an average halo engagement ring can be slightly lower than that of a solitaire.  Also if you like bling, a halo ring can take up more space on your finger and attract more attention.  Keep in mind that you will want to buy a halo ring from a jeweler who is known for their craftsmanship as you want the stones to be evenly and securely set.

At Padis Jewelry we have a large selection of halo rings from some of the top luxury brands.  Our inventory includes names such as Verragio, Simon G, A Jaffe, Gabriel & Co, Tacori, Jeff Cooper Design, Scott Kay, and much more.   Contact us to set up an appointment to visit one of our San Francisco showrooms to see our stunning collection of certified loose diamonds and ring settings.

Tips for Buying an Engagement Ring

Shopping for an engagement ring is exciting but it can also be a bit overwhelming.  If you are looking for the perfect ring for your intended, this may be your first major jewelry purchase and one that you really want to get right.

Even before you set foot in a jewelry store or start browsing online, you need to think about how much you want to spend - set a budget and stick to it.  Most experts agree the “three month salary rule” is probably out-of-date but stay in your comfort zone.  Knowing what you want to spend is also helpful for your jeweler as it narrows down the selection.

While some couples opt to shop for an engagement ring together, there are plenty of people who still want to surprise their girlfriend with an engagement ring.  If that’s your intention, think about what style of ring would best suit her lifestyle and preferences.  In addition try to find out her ring size.

Other considerations to think about include the metal color of the setting and the shape of stone you think your girlfriend would prefer such as round, princess, oval, etc.  To learn how diamonds are graded, read up on the 4Cs - cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.

Moreover at Padis Jewelry, we highly recommend choosing a reputable jeweler that you can trust.  Find out how long they have been in business, are their diamonds certified, and are they a member of the American Gem Society (AGS)?  Read online reviews and ask friends and family for recommendations.

At Padis Jewelry we are proud to say that we have been selling jewelry to the San Francisco area for more than forty years and are family-owned and operated.  We are also one of the 5% of jewelers in the U.S who is an accredited member of the AGS, and we have two GIA Graduate Gemologists on staff at all times.  Please contact us to set up a visit to one of our three San Francisco showrooms or our St. Helena store.

Buy De Beers Forevermark Diamonds at Padis

Among our large collection of stunning certified loose diamonds and diamond jewelry, Padis Jewelry also sells the renowned Forevermark diamonds.  For over 125 years, The De Beers Group of Companies has had a history of diamond expertise and sells some of the world’s most stunning diamonds.  All of their diamonds not only meet their strict standards for quality and beauty but are also responsibly sourced.

In fact less than one percent of the world’s diamonds meet Forevermark’s standard of excellence, which goes far beyond the 4Cs.  Before a diamond can be marked with the Forevermark inscription, it has to go through a rigorous inspection.  Once it meets the criteria, each diamond receives the Forevermark icon and a unique identification number that is as small as 1/5000th the width of a human hair and only visible under 50X magnification.  Your diamond is registered under your name by this number.

Furthermore, you can wear your Forevermark diamond with pride as it comes from a company that is committed to not only supplying the world with the most beautiful diamonds, but doing it with integrity. They ensure the mines comply with strict political, financial, social and environmental requirements and see to it that the local communities also benefit.

Please contact us to set up a visit to one of our three showrooms in San Francisco or our store in St. Helena to see our full collection of radiant Forevermark rings, loose diamonds and other fine jewelry.  In addition to carrying Forevermark diamonds, we also have a large selection of other top luxury brands including Verragio, Tacori, Ritani, Endless, Jeff Cooper Designs, Henri Daussi, Michael M., Sylvie, Demarco, Simon G., Scott Kay, and many more.

As a family-owned business, Padis Jewelry has been a trusted source for buying exquisite certified loose diamonds, engagement rings and fine jewelry since 1974.  We have one of the area’s largest inventories as well as an impressive selection of top name luxury brands.  So if you are a lover of beautiful jewelry, we encourage you to schedule a visit to San Francisco’s best jewelry store.
