The most expensive cut of diamond is
the round brilliant. Gemologists estimate that a round cut diamond may
cost as much as 30% more than a similar fancy shaped diamond for several
reasons. For one thing, it takes much
more raw material to cut round brilliant diamonds and to ensure the demanding
proportions that maximize the potential brightness of the stone are met. It is also due to the much larger demand for
round cut diamonds.
It is a common misconception that a
diamond’s cut is the shape of the stone such as round or oval. Rather the cut of the diamond describes how
well the stone’s facets interact with the light. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA)
says the proportions of a precision-cut standard round brilliant diamond affect
the brightness of the diamond (the amount of internal and external white light
reflected). It also affects the fire, which
is the scattering of the white light into all the colors of the rainbow, and
finally the scintillation or the amount of sparkle the diamond produces.
They add that, “precise artistry and
workmanship are required to fashion a stone so its proportions, symmetry and
polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond.” The “ideal cut” allows the maximum amount of
light to return through the top of the diamond and takes into account the
depth, table size, crown height and angle, girdle thickness and more. Gemologists carefully evaluate a rough stone
to determine the best cut that will offer the maximum clarity, color and carat
weight.
While all of this may sound
complicated, it does help to have a rudimentary understanding of how the cut
affects the stone’s sparkle and brilliance as well as to only shop with a highly-respected
jeweler. Diamonds are an investment and
it pays to make an educated decision. Please
