Repurpose Your Jewelry into Something You Love

Does your jewelry collection include pieces passed down to you from family members? Pieces which have sentimental value but are not your style and which you never wear?  We understand that while you may not want to sell the pieces outright, you might want to consider having the jewelry repurposed into something that better reflects your personal style.

If you like the idea, go ahead and have the pieces appraised by a reputable jeweler.  An appraisal will give you the value of the jewelry as well as what precious metals were used and the quality of the gemstones or diamonds.   At Padis Jewelry, we have an American Gem Society (AGS) certified gemologist appraiser (CGA) on staff who can tell you all about your jewelry.

We also have experience in redesigning jewelry and can help you repurpose your unworn jewelry into a design you will love and wear, yet will still have its sentimental value.  Moreover if you already have an idea of what you want, trust our jewelers to expertly guide you through creating it.

Repurposing old jewelry can help alleviate some of the cost of a brand new custom piece.  In addition, if you have any gold or platinum jewelry you would like to sell, Padis Jewelry can give you a quote based on today’s metal prices.  Please visit our website for contact information to schedule an appointment with the Bay Area’s foremost jewelry experts.

Our Diamonds are Independently Graded

When buying diamonds from Padis Jewelry, you can feel confident you are getting what you paid for as every diamond over 0.40 carats comes with an independent grading report that assesses the overall quality and authenticity. Our diamonds are graded at the most trusted and accredited diamond grading laboratories in the industry including the US division of AGS, Forevermark, and GIA.
To give you an idea of what you will see in your diamond’s grading report, you can take a look at a sample GIA grading report on their website.  According to the GIA, their reports represent the “highest standard of reliability, consistency and integrity.”  Your report will include information on the 4Cs (the GIA is the creator of the 4Cs) of your stone and assess the Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight. You will also get a plotted diagram charting the clarity characteristics as well as a graphic representation of the stone’s proportions.
If your diamond is in the D-to-Z color range, your report will also have a GIA Cut grade.  The Diamond Cut grade describes the “components of brightness, fire, scintillation, polish, and symmetry, as well as weight and durability concerns, into a single overall grade for cut quality for standard round brilliants.”
Another service offered by the GIA is their “Report Check” that allows you to confirm that the information on your report matches the archived GIA report database.  All you need to do is to enter your report number on their online search tool.  Also if you have a diamond you want to have authenticated and graded by the GIA Lab, you can submit it to them for a fee.
Please visit the Padis Jewelry showrooms to experience firsthand one of the best inventories of certified loose diamonds in California.  All of our jewelry consultants are diamond experts and we look forward to helping you find your perfect “stone.”

The Different Types of Jewelry Settings

When we buy a new piece of jewelry, it is generally an item we intend to wear and enjoy for many years.  This is why Padis Jewelry wants our customers to be satisfied with their purchases and believe that the more you know about the jewelry; the better the chance that you will love what you buy.  One of things that consumers can find confusing is the many different types of jewelry settings.

The term bead setting describes the process of evenly setting diamonds or color gemstones with the surface of the metal.  Bead-like prongs between each of the stones secure them to the metal.  A bezel setting is the method of wrapping a diamond or gemstone with the metal so only the crown and table can be seen.  Another type of setting is called a cathedral and consists of cathedral-like arches on each side of the diamond or gemstone.

Channel settings are very common.  It is the method used to arrange diamonds or color gemstones adjacent to one another in a channel with no metal showing between each stone.  A cluster setting is the term used to describe stones that are grouped together and arranged to look like one large stone.  In a flush setting, a hole is created in the metal surface and the diamond or gemstone is placed inside.  The table of the stone is set evenly with the metal’s surface.

With an inlaid setting, a part of the metal setting is cut away and the stones are set flush with the surface of the metal.  In an invisible setting, it appears as if there is no setting behind the stone due to the way the stones are set in the arrangement.  Prong settings are another very common type of setting, and in this case, the diamond or gemstone is mounted to the metal with prongs that wrap around its girdle and usually secured to the crown of the stone.  With a pave setting, small stones are held in place by very small handcrafted prongs and the tables of the stones are evenly set with the metal surface.

If you have a question about a jewelry setting or want to know more about a particular piece of jewelry, please contact us.  In addition to our online store, we have three showrooms in San Francisco and a store in St. Helena, CA.

Padis Jewelry, a family-owned business, has been a trusted source for buying exquisite certified loose diamonds, engagement rings and fine jewelry since 1974.  We are one of the only jewelers in the area that offers such an exclusive selection of top names in the industry as well as such a large inventory.  We invite you to visit our showrooms to see our beautiful collection of fine jewelry.

San Francisco’s Historic GiftCenter & Jewelry Mart

Padis Jewelry has three showrooms in San Francisco as well as one in Napa Valley, Padis Romance in St. Helena.  Our Designer Galleria and one of our showrooms are located at the GiftCenter & JewelryMart in San Francisco’s renowned jewelry district, which is a hub for the biggest names in jewelry and fashion accessories - all offered at the best prices.

Conveniently located to serve the Bay Area, the five-story GiftCenter is on the National Register of Historical Places and the California Register of Historic Places.  The building was constructed in 1912 by the National Carbon Company, and later became a paper warehouse for Blake, Moffitt, and Towner.  It went through a major exterior and interior renovation when it was converted into the gift and jewelry showrooms in 1983.  The renovation added more usable space and light with the addition of a glass atrium.

The GiftCenter is the leading wholesale jewelry emporium for Northern California and offers jewelry shoppers a truly unique experience.  For convenience you will find that all of the jewelry-related businesses are consolidated in the lower and street levels of the building.  Furthermore, customers can feel confident shopping at the friendly GiftCenter as most of the stores are locally-owned, family businesses.

So not only are prices typically better than at corporate-owned jewelry chain stores, but like Padis Jewelry, most offer a personal touch to make you feel welcome from the moment you walk through the door.  At our Padis showrooms, you will find our entire inventory on display where we proudly offer pieces from the most sought-after jewelry designers and watchmakers with prices clearly marked.  In addition you will find one of the largest collections of rings and certified loose diamonds in California.  We encourage you to set up an appointment to experience firsthand our beautiful collection of jewelry.

The World Famous Hope Diamond

The 45.52 carat Hope Diamond is widely considered to be one of the most famous diamonds in the world.  The unique deep-indigo colored stone was discovered centuries ago and is probably from the Kollur mine in Golconda, India.   While in the later years, it earned a reputation for bringing bad luck to its owners, early-on it was considered to have great mystical powers because of its unusual size and color and was believed to have adorned a Hindu statue.

One of the first accounts of the 112 3/16-carat, crudely-cut stone is when a French trader by the name of Jean Baptiste Tavernier sold it to King Louis XIV of France in 1668.  A few years later, the king had the somewhat triangular-shaped diamond recut by the court jeweler, Sieur Pitau, into a 67 1/8-carat stone.  During the French Revolution, the diamond was stolen and its location unknown for several years until it resurfaced in 1812.  It was then purchased by England’s King George IV.  When he died deeply in debt in 1830, it is believed the diamond was privately sold.

In 1839, it was referenced in a gem collection catalogue after the death of a well-known collector, Henry Philip Hope, and for whom the stone is named.  After that the diamond changed hands several times until it was purchased by the famous jeweler, Harry Winston in 1949.  In 1958, the company donated the diamond to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. where it became an immediate star attraction.

The curse stems from a story that claims Jean-Baptiste Tavernier stole the 112.16 carat blue diamond from the eye of a Hindu statue.  According to the legend, once the priest discovered the loss, they put a curse on whoever possesses the gem.

Padis Jewelry, a family-owned business, has been a trusted source for buying exquisite certified loose diamonds, engagement rings and fine jewelry since 1974.  We are one of the only jewelers in the area that offers such an exclusive selection of top names in the industry as well as such a large inventory.  For an opportunity to view one of San Francisco’s most impressive collections, please contact us to schedule at visit.
