The Knot, one of the nation’s largest
sources for wedding news and inspiration, tells shoppers to make sure they do
their homework before buying
a diamond to ensure it is a conflict free diamond. In order to ask the right questions, you need
to know the facts. In 2002, the UN created
a system to monitor the trade of rough diamonds and to eradicate conflict
diamonds from the world’s diamond supply. The Kimberley Process Certification
Scheme was adopted in 2003 and “outlines the regulations and requirements
countries must follow to make sure a diamond is mined and shipped in a humane,
legitimate way.”
Conflict free diamonds are defined as
stones that do not finance illegal activities including unethical working
environments or violence by rebels to undermine legitimate government. All international shipments of rough
diamonds that meet the regulations are shipped in tamper resistant containers
with a Kimberley Process certificate seal.
When you shop for diamonds, your
jeweler should be able to tell you the diamond’s source and provide the
diamond's System of Warranties statement.
If they are unable to do so, it is a sign that the stone may not be
conflict free. Canadian diamond mines
have a reputation for environmental and responsible sourcing as do diamonds
from Russia, Australia and many African countries.
As a family-owned business, reputation
and integrity is important to us, which is why Padis Jewelry is committed to
