An Engaging Idea: A Guide to Finding Your Dream Ring

As your love grows and marriage is on the horizon, engagement rings are imagined, designed, or discovered. Though the sea of rings is infinite, one will inevitably stand out above all the others and become “the one.” Here are some engagement ring fashions that have continued to resonate over time.

Stacking fashion rings aren’t new, but in the bridal space it’s a trend that has gained momentum. A beautiful engagement ring begins the journey of this stacked look. When searching for an engagement ring, consider a classic solitaire in a shape you desire. Alternatively, a sparkling halo with a gorgeous pavé band is eye-catching as well as timeless. Or slip back to times past with intricate filigree, beadwork, or engravings on the band that will stand out among the throng like designs by Tacori and Verragio.

Should you decide that the stacked look is right for you, take care that the diamond is set in such a way that other bands that sit beneath it create a combination that is both attractive and comfortable. When selecting your wedding band, consider whether the style will work with other rings over time. You will want to add pieces which mark commemorative occasions, such as anniversaries, birthdays, the birth of your children, or just periodic celebrations of your love. Whatever you choose, your rings should be a reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life.

Many of today’s designers are taking advantage of laser-cutting technology to enhance engagement rings. These rings appear to be one large diamond, but don’t let the look fool you! These diamond cluster rings are actually smaller diamonds that are precision cut to fit together perfectly to give the illusion of one large stone. These cluster rings are available in most stone shapes and are very difficult to discern from the classic single-stone engagement ring. Therefore, consider this style if you want extreme brilliance at a lower cost than a traditional ring.

Join us at one of the four Padis Jewelry locations to view fine designers such as Tacori, Verragio and Forevermark and find the ring that speaks to you in a comfortable non-commissioned shopping environment. After all, you’ve already fallen in love with your partner, why shouldn’t you fall in love with a ring that reflects and symbolizes that love?

Our Customer Say it Best!

While we say it over and over again, it is never as meaningful as when one of our customers takes the time to let everyone know what Padis Jewelry offers.  As one recent reviewer writes, Padis has “reasonable prices, extensive knowledge, and quality rings.”  She explains you will find everything you could ever want and need in one place, and adds, “I'll never go anywhere else for all of my jewelry needs.”

A trip to the Padis Gift Center, elicited the following comments from another satisfied customer.  “This place is huge and beautiful with diamonds and jewels everywhere. I felt like I was in the cave in Aladdin filed with treasures.”  She was pleased to find a perfect Furrer Jacot rose gold band for her husband, which match her rose gold rings.

Over and over again, Padis customers rave about the great customer service they receive.  One man recently wrote, “All of our encounters with the staff at Padis were exceptional.  We had shopped around at a few jewelry stores, boutiques and custom designers.  My wife and I are not really jewelry folks, but we fell in love with the selection of designers here.   I wish that I had shopped a little earlier for my bands, but they were able to deliver on time for our special day.”  He also says his jewelry consultant was exceptionally thoughtful and really took care of them throughout the entire process.

Other reviewers expressed thanks that their jewelry consultant took the time to teach them about the 4Cs of buying diamonds.  Many also commented on how patient their consultant was in helping them find the “perfect ring.”  If you would like to have our professional jewelry consultants help you find an engagement ring or wedding bands, please visit our website for contact information.

The Evolution of Engagement Rings through the Decades

Just as fashion changes from decade to decade so have fashion trends in significant jewelry such as engagement rings.  While some styles have proved timeless, a look back at the last 100 years shows certain designs going in and out of fashion.

Starting with the 1920’s, halo engagement rings (setting with a center gemstone in a collection of round pavé or micro-pavé diamonds or colored gemstones) were very popular as were Asscher and emerald-cut diamonds.  As the Insider website explains, “engagement rings with geometric shapes and sharp lines were popular in the 1920s, coinciding with the height of the Art Deco period.”

During the 30’s, styles were often a single diamond set on a band in the shape of a ribbon or a bow.  In the 40’s, the DeBeers’ launched their successful ad campaign, “Diamonds are Forever!” which greatly increased the popularity of round diamond solitaire engagement rings.  The lack of platinum due to WWII meant most rings were set in yellow or rose gold.

The middle of the last century saw a trend in stacked rings that was attributed to an engagement ring of Audrey Hepburn’s as well as pear-shaped rings.  Jackie Kennedy’s engagement ring featuring emeralds and diamonds helped to make colored gemstone rings fashionable in the 60s.  Emerald-cut diamonds continued to be popular in the 1970’s.

No doubt influenced by Princess Diana’s engagement ring, which had a sapphire gemstone surrounded by diamonds, colored gemstone engagement rings were on trend in the 80’s.  Round solitaire rings were also a classic choice.  The 90’s were the decade that saw a rise in white gold or platinum settings and marquise-cut diamonds.  By 2000, princess-cut rings were back in fashion, and sales of cushion-cut diamond engagement rings were a strong choice in 2010.

The Most Popular Diamond Shape

The jewelry industry reports the most popular diamond shape is a round brilliant cut, and makes up seventy-five percent of the diamonds sold throughout the world and more than fifty-five percent of those sold in the U.S.  The cut maximizes the diamond’s ability to reflect light and brightness better than any other fancy shape, but in order to bring out the most brilliance, gemologists recommend buying the best grade diamond you can afford.

In addition given the high demand and the fact that more of the stone is lost in the cutting process, round brilliant diamonds cost more than comparable cushion, princess, asscher, oval and emerald shaped diamonds.  Also the high shine of the stone makes them appear larger for their carat weight than many other cuts.

The Gemological Institute of American (GIA) explains that today’s round brilliant cut diamonds have evolved over six centuries as diamond cutters worked to perfect the cut.  They say, “By 1750, when the brilliant cut had developed into a style with a circular face-up outline, it had passed through many variations in facet size and proportions. These included table size, crown height, length of the lower half facets, total depth, and culet size.”

Modern round brilliant cut diamonds’ have larger table facets and smaller culets as well as longer star facets and lower half facets.  They typically have 57 or 58 facets, which mean they are able to grab the light better than other diamond shapes.  Diamonds with 58 facets have a culet, which is the small area at the bottom of the pavilion or tip.  Once the point is cut off it is called a culet and counted as a facet.  Diamonds without a culet, or very small ones, are considered to be better grade.

Please visit Padis Jewelry to learn more tips about buying diamonds and to browse through our extensive collection of loose diamonds and gemstones.  With three large showrooms in the heart of San Francisco’s jewelry district and a store in Napa Valley, we offer customers one of the best selections of certified diamonds, engagement rings, fine jewelry and watches.

Keep Your Diamonds & Gemstones Looking Like New

Diamond and gemstone jewelry is an investment, which is why you want your jewelry to look beautiful for years to come.  As diamond and gemstone experts, Padis Jewelry offers some easy do’s and don’ts that will keep it looking its best.

We know especially bridal jewelry is bought with the intention to wear every day, and that people want their diamond rings to sparkle like the day they bought them for decades.  This is why Padis’ diamond consultants tell customers that, “diamonds are forever as long as you take good care of them!”

To keep your diamonds sparkling, we recommend removing your rings when doing rough work or before going into a chlorinated pool or hot tub.  Also avoid touching diamonds with your fingers as they can transfer oils that make it easier for dirt particles to stick to the stones.  Another tip is to remember to take off your ring every time you apply hand creams and lotions.

There are a few tips to help gemstone jewelry maintain its brilliance.  Since gemstones are less hard than diamonds (some are very brittle), we recommend avoiding any sudden temperature change.  We advise customers who intend to wear a gemstone ring every day to choose rubies and/or sapphires as they are almost as hard as diamonds on the Mohs scale.  Rubies’ hardness is second to that of a diamond (which is 4-5 times harder).   Furthermore if you lead an active lifestyle, we recommend you do not wear your gemstone rings and bracelets throughout the day as they are susceptible to damage.

At Padis Jewelry, we not only sell loose diamonds, engagement rings and fine jewelry but offer professional cleaning services that include inspecting the integrity of your ring’s setting to avoid losing a stone.  We also offer ring sizing, stone tightening, prong retipping or replacement, polishing and more as well as answer any questions regarding the care of your diamond and gemstone jewelry.  Please visit our visit our website for contact information and to set up an appointment to one of our San Francisco’s showrooms.
